Basic Light Set Ups

The five basic lighting techniques
Butterfly
Loop
Rembrandt (45 degree lighting)
Split
Broad and short

Rembrandt-
1)Light on half of face/shade on other side of face
2)sense of mystery/Darkness
3)1 light depending on pic

Split Light-
Key light is moved farther to the side of subject and lower than in other setups. Slightly behind the subject.
Good for musicians. Better for men then woman.

Broad-
One side is lit up big time and the short side or other side of the face is shadowed out.
can make face look wider or broader. Better for someone heavier or round faced.

Butterfly Light-
Focuses more on face and showing it and the shadow is under the subjects chin.
Use sheet of foams to soften up subjects face and reduce the shadow under the subjects chin.
Glamour style.

Loop Light-
Creates small shadow of subjects nose on their cheeks.
Variation of paramount lighting.
Must be slightly higher than eye level and about 30-25 degrees from the camera.
requires 2 lights.

Basic Flash Process

  • Every Flash photograph is two exposures in one.
  • Fill flash can be used when subject is backlit to eliminate silhouettes or shadows
  • Flash exposure is not affected by shutter speed.
  • The flash exposure and the effective range of your flash unit will be affected by aperture and ISO settings, but not the shutter
  • Flash illumination is dramatically affected by distance
  • Your camera measures ambient light and flash illumination separately
  • With Automatic flash metering, the flash illumination is measured after the shutter button is pressed , and the flash output is adjusted accordingly
  • Every SLR camera with a mechanical shutter box has a maximum flash sync shutter speed.
  • Harsh Lighting, washed out subjects and red eye can be eliminated by using diffusers and light bouncing.
  • Is it possible to change the order of when the flash fire using "Rear Curtain Sync".
  • Removing the flash from the top of the camera helps eliminate the red eye and unflattering shadows .
